Why purchase a period property?

One of our most popular properties recently has been Millbrae Cottage in Langside. So much so that it is now set for a closing date this Friday (19th May, 2023) at 12pm.

But what it is about period homes that bring such attention? We go on to explain and possibly inspire your new dream home aspirations.

Period properties often have history attached

As the name suggests a period property depicts a certain era and with this can often have great stories attached. Millbrae Cottage for example was previously attached to the two mills on this stretch of the White Cart, a paper mill, dating back to 1690, and a meal mill. The meal mill stood just to the west of the present Millbrae bridge until it was destroyed by fire in the mid-nineteenth century.

Since its origins the original cottage has then been extended and now provides flexible accommodation. It’s this back story which often attracts buyers, what better than an accommodation that has a story to tell?

Unique original features throughout the home

Sometimes lost to modernisation, however often kept in moderation, period homes can also feature unique original features. This can be in seen in both the exterior and internal decor of the property.

Victorian homes for example will have decorative cornices, cast iron fireplaces and cascading staircases, whereas Millbrae Cottage features unique wood panelling within the bathroom and hallway. Not to forget this unique round green marble bathtub.

All of this gives the home its own individual character and charm.

Not to mention, the often spacious rooms and carefully planned layouts, all unique to the time period with which the property is associated.

Tenement flats for example will often have larger kitchen/ dining facilities, whilst larger stately homes will have grand receptions and social spaces.
