The Time Out Index has been released, listing the 53 Best Cities in the World, with Glasgow coming in at a very respectable fourth place! The Index combines the results from a survey of over 20,000 city dwellers along with Time Out contributors and experts to rank this year’s best cities.
After two years of lockdowns and restrictions, people are flocking back to our cities. As a result of the pandemic, many people moved away from urban areas seeking a quieter life with better access to outdoor space – either by the way of a garden or local parks and green spaces. Students went back home, and homeworking and home schooling became the norm.
However, since the start of 2022 all the signs have been pointing towards a move back to city life as offices re-opened, travel is operating as normal, and universities and colleges are back to in-person classes. There’s now a need for being close to public transport links and less importance on moving to larger properties in rural locations.
For those living in the cities – long-delayed exhibitions are back, restaurants, bars and entertainment venues are all open so there’s lots going on.
Time Out surveyed people living in cities to ask them about everything…from nightlife and access to green space, to community spirit, dating, museums, concerts and more. The results of the survey are then combined with the view of Time Out global network experts and contributors to rank the best cities in the world for 2022.
In first place was Edinburgh due to its large number of new openings, the variety of things to do, walkability and the the number of residents who described it as ‘beautiful’. In second place was Chicago, followed by Medellín, which topped the Index for eating, drinking, partygoing. Fourth was Glasgow, thanks in part to the city’s friendliness and vast amount of green space, and Amsterdam came in fifth place due to its progressiveness and famed cyclability.
