Life in Newton Mearns

Newton Mearns is a leafy suburb located on Glasgow’s Southside. It has a wide range of parks, golf courses, sports clubs, shopping facilities, bars and restaurants and heritage sites – not to mention some of the best performing secondary schools in Scotland. Here we give you a brief overview of what Newton Mearns has to offer its residents.

Conveniently located

Newton Mearns is an easy commute to Glasgow City Centre but just a step away from beautiful country side.

The development of the M77 motorway in 1990s greatly reduced traffic through Newton Mearns and provided excellent links, which were improved further in May 2006 with the opening of the Glasgow Southern Orbital dual carriageway, and its connection to the M77. Glasgow city centre is a mere 10-minute drive, and in just one hour you can enjoy everything Edinburgh has to offer.

As well as minor and major roads, the town has bus links with the centre of Glasgow, Kilmarnock and Ayr, and the town is served by two local railway stations, Patterton and Whitecraigs, which run a frequent service to Glasgow Central.

Newton Mearns has excellent transport links to Glasgow International, Prestwick and Edinburgh airports.

In just half an hour you could be walking along the beautiful Scottish coast in Troon, Prestwick or Ayr. There are also many ferry links to enable you to explore the islands off the west coast including Arran, the Isle of Bute and the Hebridean Islands. There are also close ferry links to Ireland.

Finally, the world famous Loch Lomond which is now a world heritage site as well countless other lochs, and The Tossachs national park are just 40 minutes away. There are also many castles and historic landmarks to explore in and around this area.

Education

One of the great draws for people moving to Newton Mearns is the range of high quality primary and secondary schools in the area, as well as the well regarded pre-school nurseries and playgroups.

Within the Newton Mearns catchment there are four primary schools, three high schools and an independent school.

Primary schools include Kirkhill Primary School, St. Cadoc’s Primary School, Crookfur Primary School, Mearns Primary School and Isobel Mair School, which caters for children with special needs.

Secondary schools include the recently rebuilt and refurbished Eastwood High School, Mearns Castle High School, St. Ninian’s RC High School in Giffnock, Belmont Independent High School, and close by is Williamwood High School in Waterfoot. All of these schools are considered excellent schools with outstanding facilities and some of the highest performance results in the national league tables.
