Newton Mearns – Leisure and Outdoors Posted: 21st April 2016

Our idea of a perfect family suburb is perfectly displayed in Newton Mearns, Whitecraigs and surrounding areas. Some of the best schools in Scotland, as shown in The Herald’s recent exam league tables, quiet streets lined up with gorgeous homes and gardens, a great reange of amenities and excellent recreation facilities. In fact, the leisure and outdoors facilities in Newton Mearns are so good, we decided to dedicate them a whole blog post listing our highlights.

Wide Range of Sporting Facilities

Whitecraigs Tennis Club – nestled amongst one of the most idyllic outdoor settings in Scotland, Whitecraigs Lawn Tennis and Sports Club is the perfect tennis club for families.

newton-mearns-leisure-and-outdoors-1Parklands Country Club is a popular members club, which features a gym, swimming pool, squash courts, badminton courts, spa and regular fitness classes. It also has a restaurant and bar and caters for corporate and private events. Not all facilities require membership and classes are open to all. For more details click here.

Eastwood Park Leisure Centre is part of a top-class leisure facility situated at the heart of Eastwood Park, located just a few minutes from Newton Mearns in the neighbouring town of Giffnock. It features a swimming pool, two gyms, health suite including a sauna and steam rooms and a range of fitness classes. Facilities are open to all residents of East Renfrewshire.

Eastwood High Sports Centre is a relatively new facility located within the High School and consists of a swimming pool, games halls and a dance studio. The games halls each have 4 badminton courts, with sufficient floor space for five-a-side football, indoor hockey, basketball and other team sports. The dance studio is used for Fitness classes and the small hall is suitable for martial arts groups.

Giffnock Tennis, Squash and Hockey Club offers 6 all-weather floodlit courts, 3 mini-tennis courts for the 4 to 8 year olds and 2 heated indoor squash courts.

At Mearns Bowling Club coaching and advice are freely available as well as the opportunity to “try it and see if you like it”, at nil cost, for those wishing to find out what the game is all about!

Giffnock Bowling Club a place with a lot of history and tradition, as the first club on the current premises was established in 1893.

Scotland is considered the home of golf, and as such there are several golf courses within a ten-minutes drive.

Mearns Castle Golf Academy is located towards Waterfoot and includes a driving range.

There has been a significant investment made to the facilities here at Mearns Castle Golf Academy over the past 6 months to make it the premier golf practice and play facility in Scotland once again.

Whitecraigs Golf Club is one of the area’s most prestigious clubs dating back to 1905.

Eastwood golf course Scotland was redeveloped and re-opened in 2003 and since then has gained a reputation as a quality, interesting, and challenging course set in open countryside with stunning views. .

Finally, Cathcart Castle Golf Club is the area’s oldest club dating back to 1895. It was designed by James Braid and is played over undulating parkland and offers a challenge to all levels of golfers.


Rouken Glen Park is Newton Mearns most popular tourist attraction. It is a 143-acre historic park, which dates back to 1530. The park is a wonderful mix of formal and informal spaces. It features a walled garden, boating pond, newly developed children’s play park, garden centre, waterfall and woodland walks, a café restaurant, outdoor fitness facilities and skate park. It also hosts events throughout the year, including the annual ‘Electric Glen’ event, which proves to be a sell-out year after year.

Greenbank House and Garden in Newton Mearns is run by the National Trust for Scotland. Greenbank House and its walled garden were built for Robert Allason in the 1760s. In 1962 and the estate was purchased by William Blyth, who set to work transforming the garden into the design that can be seen today. In 1976, William gifted Greenbank House and Garden to the National Trust for Scotland. The house is surrounded by pretty woodland, stunning gardens and it even has garden games and musical instruments for children to enjoy, which are located beside the courtyard café.
