Fancy a summer vacation, but going away is not an option? If so, then we just might have the perfect guide to having a “staycation” in East Renfrewshire!
A staycation is spent at home exploring your own turf in lieu of travelling to far-off places. Because after all, the perfect vacation spot is sometimes right on our doorstep and we don’t even know it, as East Renfrewshire has just as much to offer as many foreign destinations.
Taking a staycation is also simple, flexible, and fun for the whole family. There is less to plan, and less time spent travelling, which encourages bonding as we find fun ways to rediscover the things and places which surround us every day.
If you’re planning on taking a staycation in East Renfrewshire this summer, there are plenty of things to do to spend quality time with your family. And whilst the summer weather thus far has been temperamental to say the least, embrace the bad weather! The kids and dogs will love running around in the mud, and when you’re curled up with a cup of tea and a book afterwards you will get to truly appreciate how cosy it is.
One factor which makes East Renfrewshire an ideal area for a staycation is the abundance of trails to go for long walks on and in particular, Newton Mearns which has several routes worth investigating. Many of the routes can be found mapped out here, so lace up those hiking boots, and get exploring.
Additionally, over the second half of the summer months, there are a number of events happening in the East Renfrewshire area which will make for an ideal for a day out with the family.
The fantastic and family-friendly Rouken Glen in Giffnock is hosting an event on July 30 where they invite locals to ‘Celebrate Rouken Glen’! This event will celebrate the end of the 4 Year Heritage Lottery Fund park improvement project in the glen, and has a host of activities to keep every member of the family happy. The little ones can check out the fairground and storytelling, whilst you stock up on some goodies at the farmer’s market and enjoy some of the live music which is on offer. All against the background of the idyllic setting on Rouken Glen itself, which surely earns the reputation as East Renfrewshire most popular park.
You can also have a day out and spend some quality family time at RSPB Lochwinnoch at one of their Wild Challenge events, which will be fun for everyone, and especially the younger members of the family who will love to explore the park and get closer to nature.
If you need to cool off during the summer holidays, then take the family along to Eastwood Park swimming pool. During school holidays young people 16 years and under swim free at centres at certain times – just check their website here!
Finally, Eaglesham Wind Farm is hosting a series of free family weekend activities events every Saturday and Sunday during the summer, featuring a host of fun activities such as animal mask making sessions, lessons on local birds in the area, and workshops on making bird feeders from recycled materials.
