For contemporary accommodation, open plan living has been one of the most adopted trends in recent years – commonly being used for new build apartments to give the impression of a larger living area.
However it is possible to get this look within your current or prospective home, just a few consultations may need to take place with an architect to ensure you won’t be damaging any supporting walls.
Read on to find your inspiration.

Now if you’re looking to play it safe, then most of the common open plan layouts are based around kitchen and dining space or kitchen and living areas.
This means that one large space integrates what would typically be split over separate spaces.
A great example of this is within our Ravenscourt apartment in Thorntonhall which uses a partial walls between the kitchen and living room, however they have integrated decorative mirror windows to connect both areas.
This not only provides you with an option, but assists with heating in colder months by keeping spaces smaller.
Then, for a kitchen and dining space, a breakfast bar works as a great dividing tool whilst still connecting the open space.

If you’re not lucky enough to have these features pre-built then it may be time to make a call to an architect to bring your vision to life and help you create your dream living space.
They will be able to assess function, physical limitations, size and flow within your property and ensure your home reaches its full potential.
An architect will discuss with you both your current and future needs, meaning the design will last with you through time.

Then, once complete, it’s time to consider furnishing your property.
In our experience it’s best to keep design around a minimalist aesthetic, with a neutral colour palette, playing down on the amount of furniture and accessories placed in the room.
Also make sure to use the same flooring throughout.
By doing so you will ensure cohesion between the space as a whole, take advantage of natural light and complement the whole space.
