Never has it been more important to create a living space that is calm, happy and practical. With cheery colours and sumptuous fabrics, it’s easier than you think to create an indoor sanctuary that will see you through another challenging year.

Colour

Certain colours can instantly lift your mood – sunshine yellow, bright reds and blues can add a touch of happiness to your home. Research from Showers To You found that paining your walls a bright colour will boost your energy especially when using cheerful yellow, and anxiety-busting blue.

Farrow and Ball has predicted the top shades for 2021 which include pops of striking blue and palettes of red.

Fabric and textures

Accessories can give your home warmth and cosiness – consider using fur blankets, linen cushions and natural wool or sisal rugs. These work well in both summer and winter to create a bright, warm and cosy space. Mix and match textures to add interest to your home in colours that compliment your interiors. Don’t be afraid to clash colours – and choose items that make you happy! Wood or jute flooring is a timeless choice and works well as a neutral floor that will go with any décor.

Natural plants

Last year we saw a rise in popularity of house plants due to lockdown – and many people were taking to their gardens to grow their own fruit and veg. By adding potted plants and trendy cacti you can warm up any space in your home and adding fresh cut flowers can enhance your mood and creativity. Some plants have even been proven to reduce stress and anxiety.

Furniture

Revive and upcycle tired furniture – helping to save money and prolong the life of your items. Try repainting wood furniture, replacing seat covers or repurposing curtains. If you like the shabby chic effect, try a chalk paint and replace any handles for a quick update. Chairs and headboards can also be reupholstered.

Declutter

Many of us in recent years have opted for an open plan layout but when you’re working from home or home schooling, you need to create a clean and clear space and differentiate between work and play areas. Create functional spaces by keeping surfaces clutter free and use any wall space for additional storage.

Scent

Using candles, diffusers and room fragrance can transform your space – making it feel calm and welcoming. For relaxation, use rose or lavender. If you want to boost your energy, use uplifting scents such as peppermint, lemon or grapefruit.
