Many of us have already put our tree up – after all it has been a difficult year and we are all desperate for some yuletide joy. If you’re planning on buying a tree over the coming weeks, do you buy real or fake? And which variety of real tree is best?
Choosing a real tree
Choosing a real tree can be a great adventure for children around Christmas and get them into the spirit.
The Norway Spruce is known for a having a great shape and lots of branches which are perfect for hanging your decorations. What’s more it gives off a great scent although the needles can be sharp for children and pets. This is great for those wanting a classic Christmas tree. It can lose its needles quite quickly so don’t get this variety too early or it’ll be looking a little sad by Christmas Day!
The Nordmann Fir is another popular option knowing for its even shape, soft foliage, dark green needles with a silvery underside and strong branches for larger decorations. This is great for those with children. It’s a wide tree so needs a good amount of space.
The Lodgepole Pine is great for those with high ceilings. It has a bushy appearance, long green needles, branches that point upwards and a beautiful pine scent that will fill your home. With great needle retention it should see you through Christmas and New Year.
Artificial tree
If you’re looking for a fake tree, it can be a good investment as you can use it year after year. However, a real tree uses ten times fewer materials and less energy to produce than a real tree and isn’t biodegradable.
